Joseph Warren account books, 1763-1788.

3 vols. of medical account books kept by Boston physicians Joseph Warren and, following his death at the Battle of Bunker Hill, by his brother John Warren. The first vol. is a ledger kept by Joseph from 1763-68. The second is a daybook kept by Joseph from 3 May 1774 - 30 Apr. 1775 and by John from 3 Sep. 1779 - 31 Mar. 1781. The final vol. was kept by John from 1 Jan. 1784 - 23 Jun. 1788. The entries record medical services performed by the Warrens, including fees charged. Joseph's accounts include services to servants, children, and "negroes."

Warren (Harvard, Hon. M.D. 1786) attended Harvard College (A.B. 1771) and studied medicine with his brother Joseph and with Edward Augustus Holyoke in Salem, Mass. He then served as medical surgeon during the Revolutionary War. He was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery from 1782 to 1791 and Hersey Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1791 to 1815 at Harvard Medical School and through his career was associated with the school and with Massachusetts General Hospital.
